BMW Manufacturing’s 4.0 million square feet South Carolina plant is now home to North America’s largest fuel cell forklift fleet. In March 2013 Fuel Cell Today reported that the plant had expanded its Plug Power fuel cell powered forklift fleet to 100 units, servicing its X3 assembly hall. This has now been expanded to 275 units, which now also service the X5 and X6 assembly halls and the site’s paint and body shops. Gas for the forklifts is supplied by Linde and stored in a large on-site cylinder, although BMW is looking at producing hydrogen from methane from a nearby landfill site. The methane supplied currently provides approximately 50% of the site’s energy needs and is part of BMW’s ambition to be the most sustainable car manufacturer in North America.
